This album. God, this thing is brain-numbingly stupid.
Good thing this is the good kind of stupid, the kind of stupid that’s just senseless and just super-fun. The kind of album that was stupid enough to think that mixing together “Never Say Never” and “The Authority to Kill a Minority” would work… and then somehow makes it work together.
And everything about this album carries along this fun, stupid persona. Like everything, from the Finn cover art to the randomly placed Pendleton Ward clips, to the fucking trailer. Oh yeah! This thing’s got a trailer! Complete with a Seinfeld jingle!
Every song is either two things. It might be a really cool remix, such as that cool Kitsune/Chiptuney “PSYCHOSHY”. Or it’s a really stupid way to use samples. For example, “GOT YOUR PONY SPAM RIGHT HERE” mixes Pinkie Pie with…Snoop Dog? Or how about Justin Beiber with… N.W.A.? You can alot about Renard, but you can’t say he’s got weird sample combinations.
Craziest thing is, all these sample combos work! Something about those slightly bitspeek’d voices, and those fun synth backups, and those nonsense-insane percussion all bring together into this nonsensical, chaotic, yet somehow coherent blast of a mess.
Now are there some bad things about this album? Totally. First with the nick-picky stuff, some Renard fans may be a bit disappointed with this release as it’s a bit lighter and much more house-y. For some, the use of sample may be a bit too much. There’s also a couple tracks where I felt dragged on too long (“TAGALOG LIKE IT WAS BEYOND WORTH” and “DARK TONY HAWK IS BORN” come into mind).
This, however shouldn’t stop you from checking out this great LP. Besides, it’s free so why the hell not?
